Injury and Death

Battered

Characters reduced to less than half their hit point total are battered. Such characters suffer a -2 penalty to all saving throws, and are noticeably injured. If when healed, a character is restored to more than half of his or her hit point total, then the character is no longer battered.

Disabled *Draft Rule*

Characters reduced to less than 10% of their hit point total are disabled. Such characters gain the staggered condition and can only take a single move action or a standard action. If disabled characters elect to take a standard action, or a strenuous move action (such as mounting a steed) they take one point of danage upon completing the action. If when healed, a character is restored to more than 10% of his or her hit point total, then the character is no longer disabled. Disabled Characters suffer a -5 penalty to all saving throws. Characters reduced to zero hit points fall prone in addition to becoming disabled.
[massive damage]

Massive Damage

If characters sustain damage from an attack equal to half their hit point total or more (minimum 30 points of damage for medium creatures), they must make a fortitude save DC 10 + 1 per 5 points of damage past the minimum threshhold or become disabled (a character suffering from massive damage need not be reduced to less than 10% of their hit points to become disabled).

A character who sustains massive damage also gains an injury. An injury incurs a -2 penalty to attacks and maneuvers, and causes 1d6 points of constitution drain that may be repaired by a heal skill check DC 20 + 2 per point of constitution drain in addition to conventional means of restoring constitution drain. The DM may declare for flavour purposes which part of the character's body has sustained the injury.

Battered rules were developed in collaboration with Tim (Maugan22Maugan22) for use in his Tusk Mountain campaign.
